Your help is needed for the success of the proposed settlement agreement with Mt. Hood Meadows to protect Mt. Hood.

Now that Blumenauer and Walden have finished their hike around the mountain and will begin planning their view of uses of Mt. Hood, this is the time to begin a vigorous letter writing campaign in support of wilderness on the north side.

Hood River residents should target Walden and Smith. (Our strong impression is that Walden will disregard out-of-his district residents.

We will assume Wyden and Blumenauer are "on board" but letters of appreciation and encouragement would be a good idea.

At the Beaverton town meeting recently, Wyden said, (paraphrase), "We have to meld the proposed settlement agreement for the north side wilderness request with the larger wilderness proposal." This is the goal of CSWF as well.

Ask for support from Smith (and Walden) for Wyden's wilderness proposal (261,000 acres on Mt. Hood and the Columbia Gorge), but be very specific about the wilderness designation for the north side of Mt. Hood as described in the proposed settlement agreement and encouragement to allow Riley to trade his north side holdings for 120 acres at Government Camp. This is only the first step to protecting Mt. Hood. If we can accomplish this goal, we will continue in our quest for the 261,000 acres wilderness proposed by Senator Wyden.
